Is Conan Gray gay? Gray refuses to define his sexuality
Conan Gray is an American singer who rose to fame via YouTube. The 22-year-old heartthrob from San Diego showcased his talent by posting song covers before an original composition titled Idle Town made him a viral sensation. Gray had the biggest new artist debut of 2020, with his album Kid Krow debuting at number five on the US Billboard 200.
Love is a theme that features heavily in Conan Gray’s music. His lyrics tell tales of the joys and pitfalls of love. Based solely on his song lyrics, Conan looks like a person who’s experienced everything that love has to offer.
Yet, Conan’s disclosure comes cloaked in secrecy. He might have experience in love, but he keeps the details to himself. As far as we can tell, Conan Gray is not gay. Read on to find out more about Gray’s sexuality.
Gray refuses to be placed in a box when it comes to his sexuality
Gray has no interest in ‘belonging’ to a specific sexuality. He rarely answers questions about whether he is gay or not.
It’s nigh on impossible to figure out which gender Conan addresses in his music – such is his songwriting prowess. He wishes that people would stop labeling others based on sexuality. Conan voiced his frustration via the following 2018 tweet:
“Here’s the fucking deal. If labels on sexuality and gender and beliefs and all that great stuff are helpful for you, I’m all for it. U do u. But the second you start trying to shove everyone else into a neat little easy to understand box, I get mad. Stop! Please! Fucking stop!”
“Y’all so annoying all y’all ever do is place a label on me,” he’d tweeted earlier. “Just let me fucking exist what the fuck.”
The interest in Conan’s sexuality has only increased since his 2018 Twitter rant. The comments sections under his posts usually feature conversations (and sometimes arguments) about Conan’s sexuality.
The fact is that sexuality isn’t as easy to define as most people believe. It’s the reason behind Gray’s refusal to conform to any sexuality label.
Conan talked about the pain of drifting away from a lover in his hit song Astronomy
Conan Gray wears his emotions on his sleeve as he pens and performs his music. In Checkmate, Conan swears revenge on two people who dump him to date each other.
In Heather, Conan speaks of his desire to be like Heather, a girl who’s got the attention of Conan’s crush. Gray told VMan that a true story inspired the song. He had a crush on a certain person for four years, but the person only had feelings for Heather. Gray said:
“Anything to be loved back by the person I loved. Anything to be their first choice. The slow transformation throughout the video was to represent the feminine and masculine traits I constantly switched between in order to become who I knew my crush would love. Somebody soft and sweet. Somebody like Heather.”
In Astronomy, Conan describes the pain of drifting away from a person you once loved. He talked to Coupdemain magazine about the message in the hit:
“Astronomy is about a slow, painful, often denial inducing process of growing apart from somebody. That moment when all of a sudden you look at that person you’ve loved for years and realize that you no longer know them. That you exist on two different worlds now. I find the worst heartbreaks happen slowly. There’s no explanation, nobody to blame. That hurts the most.”
