A closer look at Charlie Puth’s sexuality

Charlie Puth is an American singer who experienced viral success after uploading his songs on YouTube. After performing on Ellen, Puth established himself in the industry by collaborating with artists such as Cody Simpson and Livingston Taylor. In 2015, Atlantic Records released his first single Marvin Gaye, featuring Meghan Trainor. 

Puth gained global recognition following the success of See You Again, a song he wrote, performed and produced alongside Wiz Khalifa as a tribute to Paul Walker. Puth’s debut album was considered a critical failure, but Puth’s ability to come up with viral singles kept his name on the charts. 

Charlie Puth is not gay, but he is an advocate for gay rights. In late May 2020, Charlie tweeted, “Gay Rights!” in a thread containing a reply from Grindr.

In April 2019, fans briefly shipped Charlie Puth and Sam Smith after Sam referred to Charlie as a ‘heart throb’ via Instagram.

In March 2016, Us Weekly reported that Charlie and Selena were dating. Some outlets refuted the report, but Puth later admitted that he had ‘very short-lived, very small, but very impactful’ relationship with Selena. “And it really messed me up,” he added.

Charlie revealed that his and Selena’s May 2016 song We Don’t Talk Anymore was loosely based on their crumbling relationship. The Attention hit-maker claimed that Selena had somebody else in her mind while dating Charlie. He said:

“But the only way a song like that can come across as real is if there’s something else going on behind the scenes, and that’s what was happening [with Gomez]. I am trying to put this the best way possible: It wasn’t like I was the only person on her mind. And I think I knew that going in – what I was getting myself into.”

Charlie didn’t mention names, but the suspicion is that the other person in Selena’s mind was Justin Bieber. Puth shouted out ‘fuck you, Justin Beiber’ during a concert; and, Justin and Gomez got back together in fall 2017.

Charlie and Midnight Sun actress Bella Thorne dated briefly in December 2016. In January 2017, Bella revealed that Puth accused her of cheating on her ex-boyfriend Tyler Posey with him. At the time of their relationship, however, Bella and Tyler had already split. Thorne explained:

“Charlie saw an old news article, and he didn’t look at the date, and the date is old, and it’s about me and Ty. In Charlie’s defense, when read it, not reading the date, it sounded like it was about me and Ty still being together. He didn’t even text me or talk to me about it.”

Puth was later linked with The Originals actress Danielle Campbell, but it unclear whether the couple dated. He was subsequently linked with Halston Sage after they were spotted together at several events. In 2019, Puth seemingly confirmed that he was dating singer Charlotte Lawrence by wishing her a Happy Valentine’s day via Instagram.
